This Week at the Pool 6/23/23 - 6/30/23

Follow-up re: Member Behavior & Pool Rule Violations

We heard from many pool members in response to our e-mail last week, sharing their feelings of frustration at the issues of rule breaking and poor behavior. Many members recommended the Board and NVPools staff take a firmer stance regarding blatant misbehavior and destruction of pool property. As a result, at the Board's June meeting, the Board reviewed the recent issues revolving around destruction of pool property, misbehavior in the playgrounds and bathrooms, and disrespectful comments from adults directed at NVPools staff. We want to remind the members that they are responsible for the behavior of their children and guests, and that we have a zero-tolerance policy for actions that threaten member safety (such as throwing sand at each other in the playground) or damage pool property (using the shower curtains to flood the bathroom). We have asked NVPools staff to implement a zero-tolerance policy for destruction of pool property, misbehavior (involving blatant rule breaking), and disrespect to staff. NVPools staff will be writing up incident reports that are delivered to the Board for any such incidents and the staff and the Board will take appropriate action to include short-term benching, 1-day pool bans, extended pool bans, or revocation of membership should the situation warrant that (in the event of repeat offenders).

This Week at the Pool 6/16/23-6/23/23

Recent Poor Member Behavior & Pool Rules Reminder

In the past several weeks the Pool Board has seen an uptick in failure to follow Pool Rules, disrespect to our Pool staff, and damage to Pool property. Specific examples include:

• Many instances of underage children (i.e., 9 and under, or 10-12 if not Swim Safe certified) wandering the Pool deck unattended without an adult, or non-swim-safe children 7 and under in the main pool not sufficiently supervised.
• Older kids playing on the little kids playsets and breaking one of the little kids swings - no parents around asking them to get off or supervising;
• A parent arguing with an NV Pool lifeguard (a teenager) over the type of music being played, distracting the guard from her duties;
• Too many members slam-dunking the water basketball hoops, resulting in a cracked hoop backboard;
• Multiple Pool-owned loaner pickleball rackets destroyed by careless or deliberate behavior;
• As noted previously, a portion of the Pool wall being torn off due to members sitting or jumping on the lane divider ropes; and
• Bathroom shower head torn off.

Our Pool is one of the most sought-after Pool memberships in the area because not only is it a safe and clean facility, but because we enforce our rules to ensure it is a safe and clean facility. The Pool Board believes that the issues we are having stem from a small subset of parents who are not supervising their children for the most part. Moving forward the Pool Board and NV Pools staff will be closely monitoring the Pool on a daily basis and will issue a verbal warning to any parent found not properly supervising their children in the water or the play areas or disrespecting our staff. If this warning is not heeded, a formal written notice will be issued with commensurate action taken against the member(s). The Pool Board takes these matters very seriously and will not hesitate to suspend the Pool privileges of any member and their associated family unit for repeated violations of our Pool rules.
All members should review and familiarize themselves with the Pool Rules, available here.
Please remember, this is a private club and a community Pool. Please treat other members and NV Pools staff with respect and treat the facility as if it was your own property.

This Week at the Pool 6/9/23-6/16/23

Pool Hours This Week

Pool hours this week are as follows:
Saturday: Swim Team Time Trials in the morning.
Pool should be open for the members from noon-10:00PM

Sunday-Friday: 11:00AM-8:00PM

Air Quality & Operating Status

Forecasts indicate that the wildfire smoke from Canada should largely continue to dissipate over the weekend. We anticipate the Pool being open normally as a result. This likely won't be the last time we may encounter poor air quality due to smoke pollution from wildfires to our north and west. The Board will always assess conditions prior to the Pool opening each day and make an announcement of any closures via the Pool's Facebook, Twitter and website. Generally speaking, we would not anticipate opening the Pool in the event of a Code Purple / AQI of 200 or more (https://www.airnow.gov/aqi/aqi-basics/).

Courtesy, Cleanliness and Safety!

NOTE: This announcement was posted to the Pool Facebook page earlier this week.
Members are reminded to treat the Guards, the snack bar staff, and each other with courtesy and politeness. If you have an issue with one of the staff, please bring it to the Board’s attention – you can reach the officers using board@greenbriar.org, or attend a board meeting (third Wednesday of each month, location is posted on the pool calendar). Rudeness can result in disciplinary action including suspension of pool access.We hope that folks have noticed how beautiful the pool water is this season. The credit for this change belongs to the leadership at NVPools, who convinced the board last Fall to invest in a robotic vacuum system for this season. The entire board is very pleased with the results of this investment, as the robot is tireless and more thorough than humans. But the challenge to the membership is to try and keep the pool deck as clean as the pool interior. Please eat and drink only in the areas where there are picnic tables set up, and be sure to put all your post-dining waste in the trash. If you spill something on the deck, take the time to clean it up. And let’s make sure our younger members rinse off the sand before re-entering the pool from a playground. Our exterminator has been directed to deal with the new wasp nests and the outbreak of ticks, but this is something that’s being seen all around the county – it’s not unique to our pool.
Earlier this week we had to lower the water level in the pool for a few hours to replace one of the anchor points that connect our floating marker lines. The anchor point got pulled out of the wall because someone was pulling or sitting on the line. So please keep off the lines, and don’t give the guards any grief when they remind you.
We have given out almost 200 swimsafe bands in the first week of the season. It’s great to see so many of our younger kids getting comfortable and skilled enough to be safe in the deep water, and to be able to use the boards and join the sports teams. But the swimsafe test (swimming one lap and treading water in the deep end for one uninterrupted minute) is not a test with any wiggle room in it. There’s no shame in not feeling ready to take the test, or in not passing the test – kids should keep learning and practicing until they can pass it. No parent should attempt to interfere with the test or influence the guard giving the test – this is a violation of pool rules. We take the safety of our swimmers/divers very seriously, our rules reflect this, and the guards have been reminded that it’s their top priority.

Update Regarding Side Lot Sport Courts

Asphalt leveling work was completed last week on the side parking lot in anticipation of the installation of a third pickleball court as we have previously communicated. We anticipate the painting of the new court to occur in the next 1-3 weeks.

How to Check Real-Time Pool Headcount

Members may check the headcount status on the pool website here: http://enet.hopto.org/gbpool.html. Please note that this website sometimes takes 10-30 seconds to render with data depending on website traffic and your individual connection speed. The Board reminds everyone to be courteous and respectful to pool staff and other pool members, especially in the context of having to wait to access the property.
